Size setting overview
This page is on size setting of EAN-8, emphasizing 2 important factors: barcode width and height.

Barcode structure
The components of EAN-8 barcode include a left quiet zone, a normal guard bar pattern, eight data characters divided by a center guard bar pattern, another normal guard bar pattern and then the right quiet zone.


EAN-8 Size Setting

Barcode Width:
The EAN-8 barcode width, W (measured in pixel), including quiet zones, can be calculated from the following expression:

W = ( 7C + 11 )X + 2Q


*Note: If a two-digit add-on symbol is used, W=107X+15. For a five-digit add-on, W=134X+15.
W: width of EAN-8 barcode image, including quiet zones.
X: width of EAN-8 narrowest bar; (X min = 1 pixel)
C: number of EAN-8 encoded data characters, including the check digit; (C =8)
Q: the width of the quiet zone; Q > = 7X; For Avapose, default Q=10X


Barcode Height::

The EAN-8 barcode width, W (measured in pixel), including quiet zones, can be calculated from the following expression:

According to GS1 standard, the nominal height of an EAN-8 bar code symbol, including the human readable information, is 21.3 millimeters (0.8 inch).
